I must say that they have handed themselves with extraordinary grace, intelligence, maturity and savvy. I know that this process is equally stressful for you. In less than 6 months your child will go off to college. For example, if you called to say that your brand new Mercedes was just stolen from the mall parking lot, dont be surprised if the 2nd question is How am I supposed to get to the Prom (Of course the first question is are you alright? It may be all about them but they still love you). THIS IS THE LENS THROUGH WHICH THEY SEE THE WORLD AND THIS PROCESS. This process is overwhelming! They are being asked to make the biggest decision of their lives with 4-6 weeks of deliberations. If you attended college, the process has changed drastically since you applied. If you have not attended college, not to worry, the process is just as foreign for the college-educated parent as it is for you. The only way for your children to make this decision is to think their way out. Be there as a source to ask thought-provoking, open-ended questions that are designed to spur internal dialog. This is where life experiences come in handy. Draw upon your lifes journey for inspiration. As such, very few teenagers have the expertise to separate the message from the messenger. The moment that you lock into decision making mode for him or her is the moment that you have made you voice irrelevant. Do not take advice from family or friends about this process. Would you let you uncle fix the brakes on your car; or let your uncle do your taxes; or let your aunt give you a perm and a trim? The same principle applies to choosing a college. Just before accepting this position at MIT, I had a close family friend pull me aside and tell me not to go to Boston. When I asked why, he reminded me of the issues surrounding court-ordered busing in the 1970s. When I pressed him to be specific and about MIT, he complained about the time his car broke down on Mass Ave and how no one stopped to help him. Tragic for him, but not a reason for me not to choose MIT. I think that Ive given you enough to ponder for now. If you take just one thing away from this piece let it be the following: Deciding on the right college is as much about the process (journey) as it is the outcome. Try as you might, it is impossible to account for all variables or know all the facts. It is only through diligence and hard work associated with the process that you and your children will acquire the tools necessary to arrive at a proper outcome. Please allow your children to learn and grow from this process. Let them tap into their inner voice and embrace that which separates the children from adults: Well Reasoned Decision Making. Postcolonial Reading of Mahasveta Deviââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËDraupadiââ¬â¢ or ââ¬ËDopdiââ¬â¢ as Translated by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak à- Literature Essay Samples
Frantz Fanon, in his book ââ¬ËThe Wretched of the Earthââ¬â¢, states, ââ¬Å"Decolonization is truly the creation of new men. But such a creation cannot be attributed to a supernatural power: The ââ¬Å"thingâ⬠colonized becomes a man through the very process of liberationâ⬠(Fanon 2). For him, colonialism not only exploits, but also creates categories like the ââ¬Ëcolonizedââ¬â¢ who can be dehumanized and disempowered. Classical Marxist theory talks about the economy determining a ââ¬Ësuperstructureââ¬â¢ and that fundamental divisions of race, gender and culture are caused by economic inequalities. For Fanon, these divisions no longer apply in the colonial context. A new context arises- race, a division that the colonist makes between the colonizer and the colonized. This unequal division is black and white. And while that may largely hold true, as colonizers prevail across continents and expand their reign, all the other aspects of caste, class and gende r conveniently factor in as well. Thus the colonized party eventually suffers oppression from all fronts. If one happens to be a black, low caste, poor woman- each of these characteristics almost derive from and give rise to the other. The colonized subject is almost then as treated lesser than dirt. Mahasveta Devi- an educated Indian Bengali writer and socio-political activist has given much voice in her work to the struggles of the tribal peasant in West Bengal and Bihar. ââ¬ËDraupadiââ¬â¢ or ââ¬ËDopdiââ¬â¢ as in the original Bengali text, is one such powerful perspective of a black Santal tribal woman- the ââ¬Ëotherââ¬â¢ in a postcolonial nation state rife with internal Naxalbari politics. Postcolonial scholar, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak has translated this work to English making it accessible to much of the world speaking the colonizerââ¬â¢s language. In her Foreword to the text there emerges an emphasis on the theme of the gendered ââ¬Ësubalternââ¬â¢[1] whose voice is stifled and yet rises against its oppressors. Spivak however, sees this ââ¬Ëstudy of postcolonial literatureââ¬â¢ itself as an act of double colonization in her mindset of the ââ¬Ëdoublethinkââ¬â¢ that is shared by all of the First World scholars ââ¬Å"in search of the Th ird Worldâ⬠ââ¬â including the character of Senanayak; an officer caught between identifying with the ââ¬Ëenemyââ¬â¢ in ââ¬Ëtheoryââ¬â¢ but going against them in ââ¬Ëpracticeââ¬â¢. A claim she elaborates upon in her essay, ââ¬ËCan the Subaltern Speak?ââ¬â¢ is something she further alludes to Mahasveta Devi as well; her narration of Dopdiââ¬â¢s tale, still remains a removed perspective of a middle class Bengali leftist intellectual in her fifties. In giving her the name ââ¬ËDraupadiââ¬â¢ Mahasveta Devi establishes a relationship between her protagonist and the central heroine of the great Indian epic Mahabharata. Both defiled and humiliated, both strongly persevering and raising a voice against their perpetrators. Given the name by her oppressorââ¬â¢s wife, her upper class mistress, in a moment of benevolence is adapted by her in a tribalized form: Dopdi. The killing of her mistressââ¬â¢s husband begins the story as Dopdiââ¬â¢s name appears on the list of wanted names. While Draupadi in Mahabharata is described as ââ¬Ëexceptional and singularââ¬â¢ her marriage is also the only instance of polyandry known in our epics- a ââ¬Ëlegitimized pluralization in singularityââ¬â¢ (Spivak 387). When she is defiled and humiliated by men in the public court room, it isnââ¬â¢t any of her husbands but her Lord Almighty friend, Krishna who protects her dignity by clothing her when she prays for help. In contrast, Dopdi is in a comradely, activist, monogamous marriage and she loves her husband very much. An independent and strong leader of her tribe, she is no less than any man. The episode ends however, with her subjection to gang rape by multiple men. She does throw her hands up in the air and cry beforehand, but as a mark of defiance. No Lord Almighty comes to help this dark-skinned, poor tribal woman and she is the only one who stands up for herself and makes her voice heard. When in the end, the First World upper class officer Senanayak asks why she is naked; she tears them and refuses to wear them. Going closer to him, she says, ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s the use of clothes? You can strip me, but how can you clothe me again? Are you a man?â⬠She spits blood on his white shirt and says she wonââ¬â¢t allow him to clothe her, daring him to counter her. (402) Spivak emphasizes on the usage of this word ââ¬Ëcounterââ¬â¢ which, as mentioned by Mahasveta Devi ââ¬Ëis an abbreviation for ââ¬Å"killed by the police in an encounter.â⬠ââ¬â¢ (391) Dopdi does not understand English, but understands this word and its formula. It is her colonizerâ â¬â¢s language that she uses to imply actions against the colonized- a word for warning and death as her husband was killed in a ââ¬Ëcounterââ¬â¢. In the end however, she uses this very word against her colonizer and there is a sense that she now owns it. She uses a language that she doesnââ¬â¢t know ââ¬Ëproperlyââ¬â¢ as she challenges her oppressor. As Mahasveta Devi concludes, ââ¬Å"Draupadi pushes Senanayak with her two mangled breasts, and for the first time Senanayak is afraid to stand before an unarmed target, terribly afraid.â⬠There is a sense of satisfaction that even the reader obtains over this show of rebellion- a gruesome and bizarre victory of sorts; when the oppressed and colonized takes over their colonizer, adapts their ways and uses it in winning their own battle against them. Language serves as a key marker in separating the colonized and colonizer. Overcoming this barrier and taking control, even if it is through giving meaning to one small word is a liberating victory. Mahasveta Devi, in her Bengali text, further uses a lot of italicized words in English, which are presented in English in the Bengali text. While writers in todayââ¬â¢s post-colonial era often use words in the Indian language ââ¬Ëchutnifyingââ¬â¢ the text and adding cultural diversity, Mahasveta Devi rather chooses to Anglicize her local Bengali text. Perhaps it is to show initial dominance and significance of the colonial rule and subsequent breakthrough against it and conquest over the language itself; even as, in all irony, a middle class intellectual activist writes in a regional dialect that is relatively of a higher, ââ¬Ëeliteââ¬â¢, and literary status to narrate a story of a dusky, lowly, tribal Santal woman proud of her lineage, who uses a ââ¬Ëcrass, peasant dialectââ¬â¢ and for whom the ââ¬Ëblack bloodââ¬â¢ of her people is the most pure and unadulterated. Even during her rescue missions traveling back to the South, she could not bear to stand the dreadful and devastating view of passing by plantations of her people suffering the barbarous treatments of slavery. These recollections made her wish for a world where this did not exist, which is how she was set on going to the north. In an account of Sarah H. Bradfordrs Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman, Harriet describes to Sarah her ideal dream I seemed to see a line, and on the other side of that line were green fields, and lovely flowers. This was what she was going to fight for, and she was not going to stop until it was achieved. In Catherine Clintonrs Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom, the author argues that the most horrifying thing that could happen to a slave were auction blocks, rather than toiling in the fields, which is exactly how two of Tubmanrs sisters never saw each other ever again. This loss had a tremendous impact on Harriet that it became the catalyst of her decision to go North. It opened her eyes to all the injustices done to blacks that she became determined in making sure it would not happen to anyone. Once she reached freedom for herself, she felt like a stranger in a strange land. She knew the burdens that slavery could have on a person, and she did not want to be alone knowing her family was still suffering from them, so she had to go back to liberate them. Harrietrs niece and her two children were to be sold off, but Harriet managed to rescue them and did not hesitate once. This was a very dangerous plan to orchestrate because back then, this was Harrietrs first trip back to her home ever since she escaped, so she lacked the resources she had obtained later on. Regardless, she made the trip, corroborating that family was one of her strongest motivators to not give up on her journeys. Even though she left her parents last to be taken to the North, it was a smart plan because of their age. Making two old, tired people walk long distances is a challenge, but it was one Harriet was determined to accomplish. Harriet carefully thought that she should take the more sustainable, younger slaves so that slaveowners ran out of options as to who to sell eventually in slave auctions. Because of her tactical mind, Tubman succeeded in her goals. As a slave, it was hard not to get caught between the fearful moments inside a plantation. To get through these tough times, Harriet Green and Benjamin Ross, Tubmanrs parents, kept their family bond strong and stable with their religion. It helped develop what made Harriet Tubman one of the bravest and most determined black woman of her time, and that is her faith in God. During the time that she became one of the most notorious fugitives in America, the price set for her head was huge, ranging anywhere from $12,000 to $40,000. Nevertheless, when asked how she kept moving forward while knowing this fact, she said Twas de Lord! I always tole him, ?I trust to you. Even though she did not know the way or was in absolute danger of getting caught, she relied on God to help her succeed. In an article from The Richmond Palladium, a story about how Harriet asked God what she must do while escaping the South is described in such a way that it paints religion into a light of hope for people to follow. When God told her to go left, she obeyed, and soon after that, she found out that the side where God prohibited her to go to was where a searching party of men looking for her was walking by. Everyone that knew her was impressed by how self-assured she was in her faith. A letter written by Thomas Garret, a Wilmington Quaker, quotes She (Harriet) has frequently told me she talked with God, and he talked with her every day. Tubman was surrounded by important people in her life who inspired her to do better. Not only did her parents imply faith in her, but they also set up a great example of strong-will for her, especially her mother. When one of her children was going to be sold away to a Georgia man, Harriet Green was determined to keep him hidden, claiming the first man that comes into my house, I will split his head open. This shows that Tubmanrs mother was a strong-minded woman who would stop at nothing to get what she wants, foreshadowing to her daughterrs persistent trips to free her people from slavery. It is clear Harriet Tubmanrs mother was a great role model for her. Afterwards, Edwards Brodess, her master at the time, promised to give the family their freedom when he died if they stay loyal to him. This sounds similar to Harriet Tubman, as she tended to obtain the respect from her fugitive followers and of white people she worked with because of her actions. The 19th century was a time of rebellious movements from abolitionists towards whites. These kinds of rebels would often inspire Tubman into her own journeys. One of the most famous persons involved in this was John Brown. In a letter to his son the day after he met Tubman, John describes her as the most of a man, naturally, that I have ever met with. John Brown truly believes that Harriet Tubman has the mentality of a man at that time because shers strong, independent, and a reliable soldier. Just as he admires Tubman, Harriet has respect for Brown as well. Because of this, it makes her even more determined to go after her goals of freeing slaves without giving up. One of the most popular black uprisings of the century was Nat Turnerrs revolt of 1831, where him and his crew killed over sixty whites less than a hundred miles from where Tubmanrs home was at the time. Although this event was seen as terrifying for the whites, it was exhilarating for the black community, from which young Tubman was a part of. Nat Turner must have been a big influencer for Harrietrs bold personality that led her to become a national hero. Regardless of the revolt being a massacre, Turner had obvious beliefs, one of which included that blacks should not be treated as property. Harriet Tubmanrs revolt to make her belief come true was to free slaves. During her constant trips, the slaves who accompanied her were obviously scared. To calm them down, Tubman sang verses to them such as Hail, oh hail ye happy spirits, Death no more shall make you fear. These words would not only flow beautifully within the fugitives but also in Tubman herself. The goal of her music was to keep her people strong, so when they were ready to keep moving, Harriet could not give up on her already lifted up followers. Whether she realized it or not, the song meant for the fugitives was also a glimpse of hope for herself. Harriet Tubman believed that she could foretell the future, which was a great asset in her determination. She claims that when she came to the North for the first time, one of the visions she had when she was younger replayed itself in real life exactly the way she remembered. That is why she constantly rescued slaves from the South without a second thought. She believed that any dream she could possibly have would become true. She was so assured of this because her father also had similar powers, given that he somehow predicted the outcome of the Mexican war. Knowing the amount of faith in God that she had, she still could not have stayed on track if it was not for the help of friends and white co-workers. Passes were given to her by people who worked with her during the Civil War, allowing her ease of transportation, entrance to a building, or just to grab whiskey. If a white man did all the work Harriet achieved, it would have been easier to free slaves by simply crossing them over, only having to hide the slaves and not himself. That was not the case, so Tubman, as a spy for the Civil War, used these passes to do what she was appointed to do plus help lead rescue missions to free slaves deep into the occupied South Carolina. Some might argue that because Harriet Tubman was very determined, her actions showed to be too extreme at times. One of her most famous quotes Dead niggers tell no tales depicts how Harriet would often threaten slaves into not giving up, because if they did, she would kill them. In contrast, this did show how smart she was, because even if she let one person go back to the South alive, the chance of Harrietrs plan coming out to the public would have always been a possibility. Harriet Tubman was a woman that made history by freeing countless of slaves without feeling content with freedom just for herself. Her fearless and intrepid personality is an abstract subject that has many reasons behind how it was formed and kept steady throughout her trips. What made her so special is that she kept putting herself in danger for an estimated amount of 19 times, even though Tubman herself never kept track of the number of her trips. Is Your Old Bottle of Sunscreen Still Good
When I clean up my car, which isnt very often, I always come across sunglasses and old bottles of sunscreen that I had been unable to find. The sunscreen cooks in my car (sometimes for a couple of years) before Ive used it up. Is it still good to use? It turns out the answer to that question is yes.If your sunscreen has an expiration date posted on the container, then throw it away when it expires. Otherwise, sunscreen is intended to maintain its original strength for three years. After this time, you might experience some loss of effectiveness or degradation of the inactive ingredients, though most sunscreens will still maintain some potency for longer periods of time.You are supposed to apply sunscreen liberally, so in theory, you should use about a quarter of a 4-ounce bottle every time you apply the product. Youre also supposed to re-apply sunscreen after a couple of hours or after swimming or perspiring. Thats a little tricky because most sunscreens are intended to be applied to dry skin 30 minutes prior to exposure so that they can bond with the skin to provide maximum protection. If you follow the instructions on the label, chances are your sunscreen wont last from one season to the next. The colonies were by no means homogeneous. Lifestyle, customs, and demographics differed among the different regions of the colonies. Even by the 18th century, divisions between various regions and colonies existed. One of the manifestations of the diversity of colonial life was in one of its most persistent and pervasive institutions: slavery. Slavery existed on social, cultural, economic, and political levels. Although there are some common themes of slavery throughout the colonies such as the brutalization of slaves, and the basic means of using free labor to boost the economy, there were some key differences to the way slavery was practiced, how it was perceived, how it was supported by law, and how slavery fit into local economy and culture. These differences parallel the greater differences that existed between the different regions of colonial America. Slavery was heavily entrenched in the Chesapeake region by the 18th century.
